For our second year of participation in Photofairs Shanghai 2019, Christine Park Gallery would like to re-produce Hong Kong based Filipina artist Xyza Cruz Bacani’s New York solo exhibition, We Are Like Air presenting the photographs curated from a similarly titled book. It will be the artist’s first solo booth in a commercial art fair and third consecutive participation in Photofairs (San Francisco 2018, Shanghai 2018 and Shanghai 2019). Parts of We Are Like Air series featuring migrants in New York were presented for the first time in Photofairs Shanghai 2018 and this time, more stories taken in Hong Kong and in the Philippines will be added.

At its core, We Are Like Air is a visual metaphor for the waymigrant workers are often treated in every society – an ever-present necessity of production, but often permanently unseen. Through documenting eight inter-woven stories of migrant worker families, which also includes the journey of her mother, Georgia Bacani, the artist drives to the heart of this conversation in an extremely personal and relevant way through the images she has created.

A video will accompany these photographs alongside the images depicting the stories of these migrant workers and the exhibition will also feature an installation of cross-stitch embroidery, which was created by migrant workers in Hong Kong. Inspired from her photographs,, the embroidery serves as a physical representation of how society operates  through the work of the invisible hands, performing multiple kinds of labor.
